Injecting colour + personality

Last week i signed myself up for Rachel's new e-course Style Your Space. It's a great course on how to really make a house a home. And you'll especially love it if you dig the challenge of decorating on a budget.
So now I've been inspired to get my butt into gear and get this house of ours finished off! First on my list is our open plan living/dining/kitchen room. It's huge with soaring ceilings which i love...but everything else is either brown or cream. Brown kitchen. Brown leather lounges. Dark wood furniture. Cream walls. Good bones but that's about it...time to inject a bit of colour and personality!

dresser before

First up was my kitchen dresser. I took off the doors because you could never see what was in it with the doors shut...which isn't so great when you want to display stuff. I originally thought i would paint over the dark wood because I'm a bit sick off all the wood furniture in our house...but in the end i couldn't bring myself to do it! Instead I just filled it up with colourful stuff...

dresser after

I also put some fabric along the back part. I just stuck it down with thumb tacks. It's a bit rough but it will be easy to swap it to a different pattern if i feel like a change.

And just about everything else is stuff i've found while scouring the op shops. Except for my much loved Kate Mason original of course! I'd also like to change the round handles on the little drawers to a mix of handpainted ceramic ones. I've seen them in a shop in town so plan to start collecting a few.

I love collecting kitchen things by colour and anything in mustard yellow, teal or green will usually end up in my basket.I'm thinking of painting a feature wall in the room a similar yellow to the little spice jars. When we built the house the wall was painted an olive green colour. I never liked it and have no idea why i picked it because it just wasn't "me". Anyway I have lived with it for three years so I think I'm now entitled to paint over it. Only thing is the wall goes up 54 courses...which means repainting is no easy feat! Nor is changing a downlight or dusting cobwebs for that matter...but we didn't really think of that at the time! So now I'll have to wait until Lennie can organise some scaffolding...and then get up there and paint it himself 'cos I go up two rungs of a ladder and no further. All that to say i may be waiting a little while for my sunny yellow wall...

Your dresser makeover looks seriously gorgeous Jodie...I almost fell off my chair reading your post though...would you believe....I have had the very same plans for my kitchen dresser....and only today cut the fabric to line the back of it....it felt freaky reading you post...lol
Having said that....yours looks awesome...and I dont think mine will look even close to that good!

Janelle showed me that e-course link the other day....its very tempting...and it sounds as though you are loving it.
Looking forward to watching your home makeover evolve....its such a lot of fun.
